Project Background: Afghanistan Value Chains Program (AVCP)

The Afghanistan Value Chains Program (AVCP) focuses on enhancing productivity in key livestock and crop value chains, improving the commercial viability of agribusiness, and strengthening public-private agriculture service delivery. AVCP adopts a Market System Development (MSD) approach to create a resilient market in Afghanistan. This approach aims to spur economic growth, increase food security, and foster the participation of women in Afghanistan’s economy.

Job Requirements:

Role’s Purpose:

The Gender and Youth Specialist will play a crucial role in implementing gender mainstreaming in the work program. Collaborating closely with the Gender and Youth Director, they will strive to promote equal opportunities, cultivate a gender-sensitive work environment, and reduce gender or age-based discrimination. The specialist will identify firms led by women or young people, tailoring support programs to meet their unique needs, and supporting the implementation of the apprenticeship program in Kabul and regions.

Objectives and Duties:

  1. Provide gender perspectives in all aspects of the work program.
  2. Enhance gender equality in the value chain through gender-equitable market system facilitation.
  3. Offer training and advice to anchor firms on equal opportunities, gender-sensitive work environments, and discrimination issues.
  4. Conduct business assessments for the Apprenticeship Program in Balkh and surrounding provinces.
  5. Identify opportunities for women and youth in the work program, focusing on firms led by women or youth.
  6. Diagnose constraints on business growth for women and youth.
  7. Implement, supervise, measure, and report on gender and youth support activities.
  8. Engage with a broad range of project stakeholders.
  9. Contribute to project activities, planning, reports, and deliverables.
  10. Ability to travel to provinces, districts, and villages.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture/Livestock, Economics, Gender Studies, and Women Empowerment.
  • Five years of experience in implementing donor projects, preferably in a gender and youth support role.
  • Previous experience working with SMEs in a support role, preferably in the livestock and Crops sector.
  • Knowledge of gender and youth inclusion best practices.
  • Fluency in English and relevant regional languages.
